Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, began his maiden statement in the House on Monday with a verbal dispute with Speaker Om Birla.
Speaking on a statement of gratitude to the Presidential speech, the Congress’s head Rahul Gandhi questioned Birla’s decision to bow towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi after shaking hands with him after being elected as the presiding officer.
Rahul Gandhi Questioned- “Speaker, there are two different people seated in that chair. The first one is the Lok Sabha speaker, the Speaker of the Indian Union, and the second is Mr. Om Birla.
When Modi-ji shook hands with you and I then went to do the same, I sensed something. “when Mr Narendra Modi-ji shook your hand, you bowed down before him, but When I did the same, you stood straight”. May I ask why?
To this, Birla responded that his culture and his values had taught him to give respect to elders. “According to my culture and values- Bow down politely and salute those who are senior to you, since the Prime Minister is the head of this House, I bowed down. Be respectful of other people of equal position. I am stating this from the Chair: bend down to seniors, if necessary, by touching their feet, and giving full respect to those who are younger than you. “This is our norms of culture and values, and I follow them by heart,” the Speaker stated likely.
In reply, Rahul responded: “I understand your point completely but I want to clarify that the Speaker is in the highest position in this Assembly and we all here should bow down right in front of the Speaker.”
“This is a parliamentary system, and you are the head of this House. Ideally, You should never bow down before anyone,” he added, adding that the Speaker serves as the House’s custodian.
During his address, Rahul put up a picture of Lord Shiva and asked the Speaker for permission to speak about it. Birla interrupted him, saying, “You said the House should follow rules. According to the rules of the system, no placard or sign may be exhibited in the House.
