Novak Djokovic’s First Win in Wimbledon 2024: A good news for Novak’s fans and wellwisher, prayers accepted.
It was Novak, the tennis star’s first match since he had to withdraw from the quarterfinal of the French Open because of a knee injury. There were more close-ups of Djokovic’s knee on television than there were of any other part of the game.
Djokovic showed his affection for Wimbledon by stating that if it had been any other tournament, he would not have competed four weeks following knee surgery.
Despite all of his optimism during the Wimbledon lead-up, Novak Djokovic was unsure of how his wounded knee would fare on grass until he stepped onto the match court, which carries a lot of pressure for sure. The seven-time champion never really had to step out of second gear in his 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Vit Kopriva, a 27-year-old playing in just his second grand slam match.
With his right leg supported by a knee brace, Djokovic faced the 27-year-old Czech qualifier and didn’t exhibit any symptoms of difficulty. He converted his sixth break point in a long fourth game and quickly won the rest of the first set.
Early in the second set, he broke once more, extending his right leg to stay in a rally before, in a typical manner, turning defence into attack and pressuring Kopriva to go long.
There were several quick points, which were likely caused, at least in part, by Djokovic’s attempt to avoid running longer than necessary. Out of the 91 encounters that lasted 4 or fewer strokes, he ultimately took 68 of them.
Only three and a half weeks after having surgery to heal a torn meniscus, Djokovic was able to flex his right knee with ease while sporting a grey brace. Even though he appeared a touch hesitant when he hurried to his forehand side and took additional care to avoid slipping, he was more than happy with his commendable efforts for the match.
“I just tried not to worry a lot about the knee rather just really concentrated on the game.” Together with my team, I have done everything within my power to provide myself with this opportunity. I doubt that I would have taken a chance or hurried it if it had been for any other tournament. The Centre Court audience roared with applause as Djokovic remarked, “I love Wimbledon that much.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion continued, “I tried to really focus on the tennis match rather than thinking about the knee too much,” during his on-court interview.
“It was excellent,” said Djokovic, who will face Jacob Fearnley in the second round following the Scot’s victory against Alejandro Moro Cañas of Spain in straight sets. I was really happy with how I felt on the court. Naturally, the knee made it a little challenging to enter Wimbledon. I had no idea how things would work out on the court. Really happy with how I felt and performed today.
Seeking to win his 8th Wimbledon title, Djokovic will next take on the victor of a first-round encounter between local wildcard Jacob Fearnley and qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas.
At Wimbledon 2024, second-seeded Novak Djokovic won against the Vit Kopriva and took place into the second round. The singles men’s first-round match saw the Serbian ace win 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. It’s interesting to note that Djokovic never lost a Wimbledon first-round match.
He’s competing to win his eighth Wimbledon championship, which would put him on par with the legendary Roger Federer.
