Mournfully, India lost its most expensive diamond yesterday—Ratan Tata. Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Naval Tata passed away on Wednesday night (09 October 2024) at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. He had been admitted due to age-related health problems.

When he was 10, his parents got separated and after that, he and his brother were brought up by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata.

Education

  • Ratan Tata started his schooling at Campion School and finished up at Cathedral and John Cannon School.
  • He then continued his education at Cornell University, where he graduated in 1962 with a B.S. in Architecture with a focus on Structural Engineering.
  • In 1975, he enrolled in Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program to earn a degree. While in college, he belonged to the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi.

Career

  • In order to assist the National Radio & Electronics Company Limited (NELCO) with its financial difficulties, he was named Director-in-charge in 1971.
  • He was named the Tata Group of Companies’ new chairman by J.R.D. Tata in 1991. Other firm executives objected to this choice, which led to scrutiny.
  • Over the 21 years he oversaw the Tata Group, profits increased by more than 50 times and revenues by more than 40 times.
  • He successfully negotiated the acquisition of Tetley by Tata Tea, Jaguar Land Rover by Tata Motors, and Corus by Tata Steel.
  • All of this transformed Tata from a company that was primarily focused on India into a multinational corporation, with operations and sales in more than 100 countries accounting for over 65% of total revenues.
  • The Tata Nano Car was also his idea.
  • On December 28, 2012, at the age of 75, Ratan Tata left his leadership position within the Tata Group.

Achievements

Year 1998: The Tata Indica, the conglomerate’s first passenger car, was launched this year. The car went on to become the No. 1 brand in its segment within two years.

Year 2000: Tata Tea, now Tata Global Beverages, acquires the Tetley group, the world’s second-largest manufacturer and distributor of tea. Tetley is the largest tea company in the UK.

Ratan Tata received the Padma Bhushan in 2000 (the third-highest civilian honour in India).

Year 2001: Tata AIG, a joint venture between the Tata Group and American International Group Inc (AIG), marks the re-entry of the Tata Group into the insurance sector.

Year 2003: Tata Consultancy Services became the first Indian software company to cross $1 billion in revenue. The company went public a year later.

Year 2008: Tata Motors acquires the Jaguar and Land Rover businesses from Ford, and forms a new company, Jaguar Land Rover.

Ratan Tata received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 (the second-highest civilian honour in India).

Ratan Tata’s Married Life

Ratan Tata was not a married man. He had been remained single throughout his life. He also shared good bond with actress Simi Garewal once upon a time.

In one of his interviews he revealed that he thought to marry many times but circumstances want something else, and later he decided to remain single.
