Hemant Soren, a former chief minister and leader of the JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), was voted as the leader of the INDIA (Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance) bloc parties on July 3. He later asserted his claim to form the state’s administration in a meeting with the governor.

It is planned for Mr. Soren to return as the 13th chief minister of Jharkhand. Mr. Soren resigned from the Chief Minister’s chair in January 2024 after being jailed in connection with an alleged land scam.

On June 28, Hemant Soren was granted bail by the high court in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam, and he was freed from jail after nearly five months. Prior to being taken into custody on January 31, he had submitted his resignation as chief minister.

Following arrest of Hemant Soren, Champai Soren took the oath of CM as Jharkhand’s 12th chief minister on February 2.

Who is Champai Soren and why he resigned from the seat of Jharkhand CM?

Champai Soren, aged 67, is a senior JMM leader who has spent decades with Shibu Soren, the father of Hemant Soren and the founder of the party. He served as a cabinet minister in the administration of Hemant Soren in the past. Now, Champai Soren has resigned from the Jharkhand CM to make Hemant Soren as next CM of Jharkhand.

Following the recent Lok Sabha election, the JMM-led INDIA bloc’s strength in the 81-member of Jharkhand State Assembly has decreased from 47 to 45 (JMM-27, and RJD-1, Congress-17). With the election of two of its legislators, Manish Jaiswal (Hazaribagh), and Dhulu Mahto (Baghmara in Dhanbad) as party MPs, the Bhartiya Janta Party now has 24 members in the State Assembly.

After Soren’s jail, his wife Kalpana Soren entered in politics and won a by-election in which she defeated BJP candidate Dilip Kumar Verma by more than 26,000 votes to become the Gandey constituency’s party MLA. The state’s Giridih district’s Gandey Assembly seat became vacant after JMM MLA Sarfaraj Ahmad resigned.

Ghulam Ahmad Mir, and Congress President of the state Rajesh Thakur met with Mr. Soren for a while prior to the gathering of the INDIA bloc’s allies’ MLAs on 3rd july, Wednesday. A JMM leader stated, “The legislators and leaders of the alliance partners elected Mr. Hemant Soren for his 3rd term of CM for a unified command ahead of the forthcoming State elections in October, this year.”

Hemant Soren was released from custody earlier on June 28 after being granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, which stated that “there exist grounds for believing that Soren was not guilty of the offence.”
